The True Person Behind the Facade: Embracing Authenticity
In our world of masks and material successes, where the pressures to conform and present a polished exterior can be overwhelming, the concept of authenticity often takes a backseat. It is not polished enough for most who seek the fake veneer and shine!
Many of us wear masks, concealing our true selves behind carefully constructed facades. But beneath the surface, beyond the facade we project to the world, lies the true person — unique, imperfect, and absolutely beautiful in their authenticity. I love looking underneath to see the amazing souls that shine and glow through everything that has been put onto them! Our society conditions us to conform and accepts or rejects us according to its many (often hypocritical) standards.
Animals are instinctive and pure and not engaged in wasting their energy on false pursuits. Their lives are simple and natural and in sync with the rhythm and flow of nature. They live authentically without carrying the burden of masks. They can be great inspirations for living with more freedom in our lives!
It takes courage to unravel yourself and follow your own heart, to seek and forge your own path and to live life exploring and defining your own rules.
Think about the times you did not care about what people said and did something you truly wanted to. How did it feel?
We all have experiences where we have had those glimmers of freedom and then again we have returned to conform to our masquerades due to the pressures of what others said or judged us upon. What if you were to drop all masquerades?
How do you feel when you meet someone completely humble and real, down to earth and non-judgemental of you and least concerned about your material successes, age, gender, likes and dislikes?
How do you feel when you are fully accepted for who you are, as you are? Do you accept others without passing judgment?
How does it feel to be able to trust someone and show them your raw selves, vulnerabilities and all? Have you had the privilege of people opening up their hearts to you and baring their souls?
The Many Masks We Wear
From a young age, we learn to wear masks to survive, to fit in, to please others, or to shield our vulnerabilities. We adopt roles that society expects of us — the cute child, the student with the best grades, the confident professional, the perfect parent, the always-happy friend. All these roles, while sometimes necessary to have a relational equation, can obscure our genuine selves. People often project their wants, needs and ideas onto others and do so loudly and consistently. If we get caught up in other people’s expectations, we are bound to lose ourselves!
Ask yourself: What masks am I wearing? What would happen if I started to remove them?
The Toll of Inauthenticity
Living behind a facade can be extremely exhausting. We expend precious energy maintaining an image that may not align with our true values, beliefs, and desires. Over time, this disconnect can lead to stress, anxiety, and a sense of emptiness. We may even lose sight of who we truly are. This emptiness can be damaging, detrimental and depressing.
Ask yourself: Where am I not being true to myself? What is it costing me? How can I move into being more myself and less of who others expect me to be?
The Liberation of Authenticity
Breaking free from the facade is a courageous journey toward self-discovery. It is having the courage to patiently peel away the layers we have accumulated over the years and lovingly embrace our core selves. Authenticity is not about being flawless; it is about being real, raw and willing to be vulnerable when we feel safe. It calls for acknowledging our perceived imperfections and accepting them as part of our unique essence. It liberates us to simply be and express ourselves freely.
Ask yourself: Where am I unable to accept myself? How would I benefit if I were to be more of who I wish to be?
The True Person Emerges
As we shed the accumulated layers of inauthenticity, the true person beneath begins to emerge. This authentic self is unafraid to express genuine emotions, whether it is joy, sadness, anger, frustration or vulnerability. It is the person who has become aware of their own divine nature, one who pursues their passions without fear of judgment, who stands up for what they believe in, and who forges deep and meaningful connections based on honesty and transparency.
Ask yourself: Where am I being dishonest with myself and as a consequence with others? What would happen if I were honest with myself? What would I need to face?
The Ripple Effect of Authenticity
Authenticity doesn’t just benefit us individually; it also enriches our relationships and communities. When we are authentic, we inspire and invite others to do the same. Authenticity fosters trust, deepens connections, and creates a sense of belonging. It is a catalyst for positive change, both within ourselves and in the world around us. Imagine the amount of energy saved by being authentic which would otherwise go to sustain more illusions in a world of illusions!
Ask yourself: How much more energy and resources would I have if I didn’t have to keep up pretences?
Embracing Your Authentic Self
To uncover the true person behind the carefully built-up facade, you need to start with self-reflection. What values and beliefs are truly important to you? What passions and interests light up your soul? What makes you uniquely you? Acceptance is one of the keys here. Embrace your quirks, imperfections, and vulnerabilities, for they are the threads that weave your authentic tapestry.
Ask yourself: Who am I? What is truly important to me? How can I be more of myself?
Like anything, leaning into authenticity takes time and patience. You learn to accept yourself and continually align your actions with your evolving understanding of your true self and being unapologetically you.
One of the best compliments I get from many people is that they find me authentic, not fake, not made up and trying to hold on to a carefully crafted image of some kind of perfection! They find me relatable and accepting of them as they are. They feel safe. I cherish these words as I move along my ever-evolving path!
The world doesn’t need more perfect facades; it needs more authentic individuals who inspire and uplift others through their genuine presence.
So, dive into yourself with awareness, identify and peel back the layers, reveal your true self first to yourself and then to others as you go along, and embark on the liberating journey of showing up with authenticity. You will soon discover that the person behind the facade is a remarkable, resilient, and beautifully imperfect individual full of light!
