In the world we live in, filled with constant demands, expectations, and distractions galore, it is easy to forget the importance of being kind to ourselves. We often prioritize being kind to others, whether it is our family, friends, or colleagues, and we inadvertently neglect our own well-being.

I have found myself empty and worn out like a used dishrag wondering why I felt so drained after having taken good care of everybody’s needs. Well, I had forgotten to count myself in! My needs had been left out, neglected and put last and when it came to me, I had no energy left!

Why is being kind to ourselves so essential?

What does it really do for us?

Let us see how we can understand this from a remarkable personal story.

Susan’s journey to rediscovering self-kindness

Once upon a time, there lived a woman named Susan. She was a young fashion designer with a soaring career in a big Fashion House. Her life revolved around her work and guiding her team towards better outcomes both professionally and personally.

Susan had always been an optimistic and happy person and her positivity, and optimism were like a breath of fresh air in the competitive fashion arena, where a lot of people are insecure and pulling each other down in a show of one-upmanship!

She was a firm believer in the idea that our inner world shapes our outer reality. She often told her team as well as her clients, “The way you treat yourself is a reflection of the life you create.” However, as she helped others prioritize self-compassion and kindness, she realized that she was neglecting this very principle in her own life as the demands of her career began to overwhelm her. A few years had passed and now she was the head of the Fashion Design Department at the Maison.

One day, Susan received an email from a former client, Emma. Emma had been struggling with self-esteem issues and anxiety when she first came to Susan three years ago seeking to fix her issues through a fashionable wardrobe and makeover. She never felt good enough and was always trying to find comfort and confidence in having the latest trends and fashions to show the world that she counted. Susan and her team designed a great wardrobe for Emma but Susan also helped her with her compassionate guidance and support. Emma’s life was transformed more due to Susan’s gentle coaching than the clothes. Her email was filled with gratitude and updates on her newfound happiness after boosting her self-esteem and getting more in touch with herself.

Touched to tears by Emma’s message, Susan sat down in her office. She couldn’t help but reflect on her own life. Despite helping others find fulfilment, she had of late, felt a growing emptiness within herself. She had been neglecting her own well-being, constantly pushing her boundaries, and rarely taking time for self-care in the hectic schedule of her responsibilities as Head Designer, wife and mother. She had been suffering chronic migraines and had trouble sleeping.

Susan realized that she needed to practice what she preached — she needed to be kind to herself. She needed to go back to her self-care practice which she had neglected in the distractions and demands of her career.

The Ripple Effect of Self-Kindness

Susan began her journey towards self-kindness with a simple daily practice of mindfulness meditation at the very start of her day. It was challenging at first, as her mind was often cluttered with thoughts of her responsibilities and the needs of others. But she persisted, dedicating a few minutes each morning to sit in silence, focusing on her breath and cultivating self-awareness and soon found her focus.

As the days turned into weeks, Susan noticed subtle shifts in her outlook on life. She became more patient with herself, acknowledging that she didn’t have to be perfect. Her inner critic began to soften, making room for self-compassion to grow. This newfound self-kindness gradually extended to her interactions with others. Susan found herself becoming more empathetic, understanding, and supportive, not just as a designer but as a friend and family member. She began to reduce her commitments to work and delegate more to her team and embarked on her own journey of self-improvement and personal growth.

Her team members were thrilled to progress in the company and she had more time to herself. The impact of Susan’s self-kindness didn’t stop there. Her positivity and optimism became infectious. She radiated peace, contentment and well-being. Her reply to any emergency was a typical, ‘Is the sky falling yet? If not, we can take care of it. Go find some great solutions!’ This attitude infected her team and they learned to say the same in the face of any emergency and act accordingly taking responsibility more than ever before.

Her clients also noticed a change in her presence, sensing a deeper level of authenticity and compassion. As she shared her journey towards self-kindness with them, it inspired many to embark on their own paths of self-discovery and self-care.

The Science of Self-Kindness

Susan’s transformation was like a spark for others around her. There is a wealth of scientific research supporting the benefits of self-kindness. Studies in the fields of psychology and neuroscience have shown that practising self-compassion leads to:

Reduced Stress and Anxiety: When we treat ourselves with kindness, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and reduces stress. This has positive far-reaching repercussions for our health.

Improved Emotional Resilience: Self-kindness enhances our ability to bounce back from setbacks and cope with adversity. It enables us to hold our peace in any situation or circumstance.

Better Relationships: By being kinder to ourselves, we become more empathetic and understanding towards others, thus paving the way for healthier relationships. Trust is built on reciprocal comprehension.

Increased Levels of Satisfaction: Self-kindness is linked to greater life satisfaction and contentment. It helps us appreciate our achievements and experiences and be grateful for them.

Boosted Immune System: Positive emotions associated with self-kindness release feel-good hormones, strengthen our immune system, and promote overall health.

Embrace Self-Kindness as a Way of Life

Susan’s journey towards self-kindness not only enriched her life but also served as an example of the transformative power of self-compassion. She now embodied self-kindness to her team and her clients more than ever before creating a ripple effect.

Being kind to ourselves is not a selfish act, it is an act of self-love, a fundamental pillar of personal growth and well-being. As Susan discovered on her journey, when we extend kindness and compassion to ourselves, we create a ripple effect of positivity that touches not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us. This story shows us that self-kindness is the foundation upon which we can build a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Perhaps, it is time to embark on our own journeys towards self-compassion, for it is in being kind to ourselves that we discover the true essence of our humanity and become inspirational sparks for those around us.

What would the world look like if all of us were to start these ripples of kindness?
